Israeli troops on a West Bank manhunt killed a Hamas member.
Paratroopers operating in the slums of Nablus on Wednesday shot dead a member of Hamas. Military officials said the Palestinian was armed, an account disputed by Palestinians.
Israeli forces have been operating in Nablus for two days, searching for terrorists and weapons caches. An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian gunmen were killed in clashes in the city Tuesday.
Security sources said Israel received a tip that a Hamas cell in Nablus would try to send a suicide bomber into Israel. A major terrorist attack could be enough to disrupt an upcoming U.S.-sponsored peace conference between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who broke with Hamas in June.
