The Serbian Jewish community has asked the government to ban a neo-Nazi rally in Novi Sad next month.
The Union of Jewish Communities of Serbia sent a letter to President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Parliamentary Speaker Oliver Dulic stating that the Oct. 7 rally was an affront “in the center of that multicultural city, whose inhabitants were not so long ago victims of the ideas that that group propagates.†Aleksandar Necak, president of the Union of Jewish Communities, wrote in the letter that it is “incomprehensible how a group that spreads national, religious and racial hatred, which is punishable by law, could receive permission to hold a rally.†Necak continued, “On behalf of all the victims of Nazi ideology, on behalf of us, the survivors, who have committed ourselves to never again allow a repeat of Nazi terror, we express our most vehement opposition.â€
The rally is planned by the neo-Nazi Nacionalni Stroj organization under the slogan “Serbian March, a March for Serbian Unity” and is being promoted on several ultra-nationalist and right-wing websites.
