Israel appointed a new deputy commander for its armed forces.

Maj.-Gen. Dan Harel, former defense attache at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, was named deputy chief of staff. He succeeds Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky, who stepped down Monday.
