Next month’s peace conference is the beginning of a process, Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas have agreed.
The Israeli prime minister and the Palestinian Authority president met for two-and-a-half hours Wednesday in the prime minister’s sukkah in Jerusalem.
They were joined by their negotiating teams after meeting one on one. The sides did not agree on the content of a joint statement to be presented at next month’s parley, though they made plans to begin meeting next week to work on the content.
Reports from senior Israeli officials say the statement will be general and may not directly address core issues. The November parley will be the beginning of open-ended talks on a permanent agreement.
