Israeli military intelligence said next month’s Israeli-Palestinian peace parley will not yield useful results.
In a confidential assessment sent to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, military intelligence voiced pessimism about the prospects of the U.S.-sponsored Annapolis summit, Ha’aretz reported Thursday.
According to the newspaper, military intelligence believes Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas does not have the necessary clout to deliver security in the West Bank or retake the Gaza Strip, which he lost to Hamas in June.
The report also warned the Olmert government against making too many goodwill gestures toward Abbas, such as early releases for Palestinian prisoners, as Abbas is unlikely to reciprocate, Ha’aretz reported.
Army officials declined comment.
