German’s foreign minister has warned against the use of military force in Iran.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, speaking Saturday at the annual meeting of the Social Democratic Party in Hamburg, said that “military adventures” were no solution to the threat of Iranian nuclear ambitions.
The spread of nuclear weapons in the Middle East must be prevented, Steinmeier said, adding that Germany would continue to seek a diplomatic resolution working with the United States, Russia and China.
The remarks follow Steinmeier’s talks with Iranian nuclear negotiators on Oct. 25 in Hamburg in which he reportedly urged the Iranians to cooperate with the European Union, the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
A delegate at Saturday’s Social Democratic Party meeting called the talks “constructive,” according to news reports, which also said the Iranians had initiated the contact.
One German official suggested the Iranians approached Germany as the least bellicose of the three major European powers, which include Britain and France, involved in extended diplomatic talks.
