Germany has pledged $7.3 million to the planned museum on the history of Jews in Poland.
German Ambassador to Poland Michael Gerdts signed the pledge Monday on behalf of the German foreign ministry, according to The Associated Press. Gerdts called it “a special honor and great joy to be able to assist in such an exciting project.” “The Federal Republic of Germany wants to make another contribution to the reparations for the terrible suffering perpetrated against the Jews and thus against Poland in the name of Germany,” the ambassador said. “And we also want to make it clear that the Germans remain aware of their responsibility for this tragic past.”
The ceremony was held at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. The museum, to be built on the former site of the Warsaw Ghetto, is expected to open as early as 2010.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
