Ex-NATO commander named peace liaison

The Bush administration has named a former NATO commander as the liaison between Israel and the Palestinians.

Cmdr. James Jones will report directly to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Part of Jones’ work is expected to involve judging whether the sides are complying with their commitments following this week’s Annapolis peace conference. Tuesday’s joint agreement read by President Bush called on the United States to monitor and judge compliance.

Jones, a retired Marine Corps general, has served in Iraq, Turkey, Bosnia-Herzgovina and Macedonia.
