Ehud Olmert spoke with the major candidates for the U.S. presidency.
The Israeli prime minister, on the eve of his return to Israel after the U.S.-convened Israeli-Palestinian peace conference in Annapolis, Md., told reporters that he had telephone conversations with seven leading White House hopefuls while he was in the United States for the talks.
They included U.S. Sens. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.); former Sens. John Edwards, a North Carolina Democrat, and Fred Thompson, a Tennessee Republican; and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, both Republicans.
“They were all very encouraging” about the renewed peace talks, Olmert sid. “I heard much good will toward Israel.”
