The remains of Egyptian soldiers believed to have died in a war with Israel were discovered in the Sinai Desert.

Egyptian officials said Wednesday the mass grave, with at least 10 bodies inside, was approximately nine miles from the Gaza Strip border.

Found alongside the remains were military uniforms and helmets, leading investigators to conclude they were soldiers killed in one of Egypt’s three wars with Israel before the countries signed a peace accord in 1978.

Egypt in the past has accused Israeli forces of massacring its troops during wartime campaigns, but Cairo reserved comment on how, when or why the mass grave was dug.
