Sderot residents and supporters blocked traffic in Tel Aviv to protest the Israeli government’s failure to stop rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.
Hundreds of protesters, many wearing red shirts to symbolize the “Red Alert” sounded over Sderot’s loudspeakers during rocket attacks, demonstrated Monday on the city’s major roads.
Traffic came to a standstill until police cleared the demonstrators.
It was the second day of protests, after Sderot supporters flocked to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office in
Jerusalem, where they scuffled with police.
Olmert, who is on an official visit to Germany, said his government was doing everything possible to bring relief to Sderot.
“It is a war,” he told reporters. “Our security forces have permission to take all steps they deem necessary – with our agreement – so that the situation can be changed.
“I am convinced the situation will change. Until then we do our utmost so that things will improve in Sderot and other communities near the Gaza Strip.”
