Livni to attend Lantos memorial

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni will attend a memorial service for Tom Lantos.

The U.S. House of Representatives will remember Lantos, the chairman of its Foreign Affairs Committee and the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress, in a ceremony Thursday at the Capitol. The California Democrat died Monday at the age of 80.

In addition to Livni, expected speakers include Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House speaker; Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. secretary of state; Bono, the rock star who worked with Lantos on AIDS relief in Africa; Elie Wiesel, the Nobel laureate writer of Holocaust-era literature; Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), who first hired Lantos as an aide in Washington; Ban Ki-moon, the U.N. secretary-general; and Rabbi Arthur Schneier, who founded the interfaith Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

Sources said Livni would arrive only for the memorial and would return to Israel Thursday evening.
