Yad Vashem honored a Spanish diplomat as a “Righteous among the Nations.”

The Israeli Holocaust Memorial accorded the honor to Eduardo Propper de Callejon for granting Spanish visas to Jews and others fleeing Nazi-occupied France in June of 1940, defying orders not to do so.

He is estimated to have rescued 1,500 Jews and non-Jews over four days.

His defiance earned de Callejon, a first secretary, a demotion. He died in 1972.

Attending the ceremony Wednesday were his son, Felipe Propper de Callejon, and his daughter, Elena Bonham Carter, the mother of the actress Helena Bonham Carter.
