Poland cites Jewish festival chief

The director of the Krakow Jewish culture festival was honored by Polish President Lech Kaczynski.

Janusz Makuch received the Poland Reborn medal Tuesday at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.

Established in 1921, the medal is awarded to Polish citizens who have made outstanding achievements in the fields of education, science, sport, culture, art, economics, civil service and diplomacy.

Israeli President Shimon Peres, who was attending ceremonies for the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, was hand for the ceremony.

Thousands of Jews and non-Jews from around the world visit the Jewish Culture Festival of Krakow, which this summer celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The festival features academic workshops, Jewish-themed performances and klezmer music in the city’s former Jewish quarter.
