Iran announces satellite launch

Iran announced the launch of its first satellite.

Iran announced Sunday that it had launched its first communications satellite and plans to field a spy satellite by 2015.

The news set off alarm bells in Israel, which until now has been the only Middle East state with a successful space program.

While there was no immediate confirmation that that Iranian satellite had entered orbit, Israeli experts said Monday that the main concern is that fact that Tehran managed to launch a two-stage rocket into space.

Such technology would significantly advance Iran’s military missile program – the future delivery system for nuclear warheads – and allow it to attack any target in the world.
