(JTA) — The United Nations Security Council adjourned an emergency session without voting on a draft resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.
The resolution, which was presented Wednesday night to the council by its only Arab member, Libya, also condemned Israel for "excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force" in its Gaza Strip operation while not specifically mentioning Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel.
The United States called the resolution "unbalanced" and "one-sided," as did Britain. Negotiations on the draft will be held over the next few days.
"Israel cannot, and will not, allow its citizens to be sitting ducks for terrorist attacks," Israel’s ambassador to the U.N., Gabriela Shalev, told the council.
Libyan Ambassador Giadalla Ettalhi urged the ministers to approve the resolution "so that we do not add another Srebrenica or Rwanda to the history of this council."
