WASHINGTON (JTA) — President-elect Barack Obama welcomed the Gaza Strip cease-fire.
“We welcome this news,” said Brooke Anderson, the spokesman for the transition team. “President-elect Obama is committed to working to help achieve lasting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians, and will have more to say on these issues after Jan. 20.”
Obama will be inaugurated on that day as the 44th president of the United States.
Israel has been withdrawing its troops from the Gaza Strip after calling a unilateral cease-fire on Jan. 17 ending its 21-day Operation Cast Lead. Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, followed with a seven-day cease-fire.
