WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Obama administration plans to send a high-level delegation to an emergency conference on relief for the Gaza Strip.
"The United States strongly supports Egypt’s call for an international donors’ conference in Cairo on March 2 to facilitate Gaza recovery and strengthen the Palestinian economy.," said the State Department statement issued Wednesday. "The U.S. plans to be represented at a high level and urges members of the international community to show similar support for the Egyptian initiative."
The United States has funneled $60 million into the Gaza Strip since Israel’s war with Hamas ended last month; some of that is from the $85 million the Bush administration set aside for Palestinian emergency appeals in this budget year, and some is from an additional $20 million that the Obama administration has budgeted. The money has gone to emergency food and medical supplies.
