NCJW officially backs Sotomayor

It’s not exactly unexpected, since they called her an "oustanding jurist" with "impeccable credentials" when she was nominated, but the National Council of Jewish Women officially announced its support for Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation on Monday.

"Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is an eminently qualified jurist who, throughout her legal career, has kept faith with the constitutional values of liberty, equality, and justice," said NCJW president Nancy Ratzan. "She will be a welcome addition to the Supreme Court."

“Judge Sotomayor’s testimony at her confirmation hearings demonstrated her immense knowledge of the law, her thorough understanding of the Constitution and the separation of powers, and her ability to explain her reasoning whenever it was called into question," the statement continued. "While she does not have an explicit record on every issue of concern to NCJW, her career as a lawyer, judge, and community leader, taken as a whole, inspires confidence in her commitment to, and knowledge of, fundamental constitutional rights and her assurance of adherence to precedent."

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today announced its support for Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the next justice to the US Supreme Court. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan issued the following statement:

“Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is an eminently qualified jurist who, throughout her legal career, has kept faith with the constitutional values of liberty, equality, and justice. She will be a welcome addition to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Sotomayor’s testimony at her confirmation hearings demonstrated her immense knowledge of the law, her thorough understanding of the Constitution and the separation of powers, and her ability to explain her reasoning whenever it was called into question. While she does not have an explicit record on every issue of concern to NCJW, her career as a lawyer, judge, and community leader, taken as a whole, inspires confidence in her commitment to, and knowledge of, fundamental constitutional rights and her assurance of adherence to precedent.

“We have also been informed by President Obama’s expressed admiration for Supreme Court justices Souter, Ginsburg, and Breyer — each of whom have affirmed fundamental constitutional rights, including a woman’s right to reproductive choice.

“NCJW is committed to ensuring that the critical voice of progressive Jewish women, and our broad base of allies, is heard in the judicial confirmation process in the Senate. We are proud to continue to educate, mobilize and activate our members, supporters, and friends to promote a federal bench with judges who support fundamental freedoms, including reproductive freedom, justice, equality, and opportunity for all. With so much at stake, the grassroots must engage vigorously in the process that yields lifetime appointments for those who will have so much influence on our lives for generations.”
