Most don’t know about tefillin

To the Editor:

As a Conservative Jew who laid tefillin as a teenager in Philadelphia, I can sympathize with the young man involved, but the vast majority of the world does not know of tefillin. I would be willing to bet that the majority of this generation’s Jews have no idea what tefillin are.

With people trying to blow themselves up with their shoes and belly packs, one cannot fault the gentile flight crew too much. Indeed, If the majority of the U.S. population does not know that Jews don’t celebrate Christmas and that Chanukah is not the equivalent to Christmas, one can hardly expect them to know what tefillin are.
