JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli soldier was fatally stabbed by a Palestinian while waiting in a traffic jam in the West Bank.
The alleged assailant reportedly was a senior officer in the Palestinian security service.
The victim, Sgt.-Maj. Ihab Khatib, 28, a Druse from the village of Kfar Maghar, was waiting in a jeep near the Tapuach Junction Wednesday afternoon when a Palestinian stabbed him in the chest through an open window. The soldier tried to drive away but his vehicle overturned in a ditch, according to the Israel Defense Forces.
Khatib was taken to a hospital in Petach Tikvah, where he died of his injuries.
A security officer from a nearby settlement who was at the scene ran over the assailant with his car, mildly injuring him, and then arrested him. The assailant was treated at the scene.
