OK, so maybe you were hoping that Hollywood’s shayna maidel, Natalie Portman — the only actress to play Anne Frank and Princess Leah’s mom (yes, I know how George Lucas spells it) — would tie the knot with a Jewish guy (admit it, fellas, once in a while you even imaginaed it might be you — or, in the case of the ladies out there, your son).
And/or maybe you thought Black Swan was over-hyped and someone else was more deserving of the Best Actress Oscar.
But don’t think the Israeli-born Portman’s lost that Jewish feeling. In case you missed her comments on Galliano-gate, here is the JTA brief:
British fashion designer John Galliano was fired by the Christian Dior fashion house after allegedly harassing a couple using anti-Semitic and racist slurs.
Galliano’s firing as chief designer for Christian Dior was announced Tuesday, just days after he was suspended from the house.
Galliano’s harassment of the couple in a Paris bar, which he has denied, was reported last week. On Monday, a video of Galliano saying he loves Hitler also came to light.
Actress Natalie Portman, who is the face of Dior perfume and is Jewish, said Monday that she would not be associated with Galliano.
"I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today," Portman said in a statement. "In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way." …
For better or for worse, The New York Post asserts that Portman — the face of Dior’s Miss Dior Cherie perfume — delivered the "coup de grace." According to the Post, Portman told the fashion house that "she would walk from her contract unless it cut ties with Galliano."
In a separate story, headlined "Inside Galliano’s demons" the Post cites "insiders" as attributing Galliano’s outburst "on drugs, drink and stress — a common cocktail in the fashion industry, especially for creative types at the top of their game."
