In his “Musings” column last week (“Spirit Of The Law,” Aug. 19), Rabbi David Wolpe stated that “we only have freedom because of law.”
I found this to be a curiously relevant point with regards to today’s political climate. The Tea Party Republicans “religiously” rant about government destroying the country with its laws and regulations, yet Rabbi Wolpe’s rational argument against this notion debunks that stand completely. He cited several examples illustrating how laws and regulations protect us from injury and property loss. Without laws, the powerful will prey upon the weak and the rich upon the poor.
Unfortunately, we’ve all borne witness to that in recent years.
