Kat Dennings, star of CBS’ hit “2 Broke Girls” and self-described as a “billion percent Jewish,” was interviewed by Bust, which is a ladies magazine that isn’t trying to sell women cosmetics.
“The way I view feminism — and I know there are a lot of different things going on — but, at its purest form, to me, it’s a very positive, supportive, nurturing, empowerment thing. I mean, God, who isn’t a feminist? If you don’t think women are as good as men, you’re not a good person. I like to think that most of the population of people worth being friends with are feminists, if that’s what feminism means.” (via The Frisky)
I might not like her show that much (though God knows, I tried), but I do love her enthusiasm for feminism. Yet I feel compelled to quibble with this particular soundbite. I don’t think most of the anti-feminist rhetoric out there these days would ever explicitly state that women are inferior to men. Rather, many anti-feminist folks would say that they’re “different” from men and their roles should reflect that. You know, the whole “separate but equal” argument. Or they might prioritize their baby making potential above all else and limit women’s access to contraceptives and abortion.
But I do agree with Dennings on one point — all of my friends also have to pass the “feminism” litmus test.
