Karski’s deserving awards

To the Editor:

I was pleased to read that Jan Karski is being posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. My husband and I were privileged to get to know Jan during his later years. He was an outstanding humanitarian, a highly respected professor and a quintessential gentleman.

Despite the frustrations that he must have carried with him for the remainder of his life for what he viewed as his failed mission to alert President Roosevelt and others about the unfolding Holocaust, he showed no signs of bitterness or contempt.

Jan was recognized as a Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vaahem in 1982. The Presidential Medal of Freedom adds to the fitting panoply of awards and recognition that Jan Karski received during and subsequent to his long and valiant life. May his memory continue to be for a blessing.
