Gilad Shalit’s sports reporting gig brings the meanest out of Israeli twitterers

Freed Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was under Hamas captivity for more than five years, recently got a job as a sports columnist for Israel’s daily newspaper Yediot Achronot.

Shalit is a well-known sports fan, mostly basketball, and while everyone is waiting to see whether it is a knowledgeable reporter or if Shalit’s new gig is just a lovely gimmick, the Israeli Twitter community decided that the grace period is over, and that it is totally okay to poke fun at Shalit.

Since the Euro cup soccer tournament began on Friday, the Hebrew hashtag #גלעדשליטמפרשןכדורגל (Gilad Shalit commentates on Soccer) has been a home for some jokes of much sarcasm, so I decided to translate some:

SOME MAY FIND THIS OFFENSIVE OR NOT FUNNY AT ALL

“You call that a fast break? wait until you get off the plane after five years and bibi runs towards you to give you a hug”

“From my experience, Germans never achieve any goals” (Shalit’s release negotiators were German)

“You call that a bunker? Let me tell you about bunkers”

“Gilad Shalit – everyone’s freelancer!”

More can be found here and here.
