It’s not exactly the most groundbreaking news, but… a ton of Jews made the list of 2012 Emmy nominations, which were announced earlier today.
Four out of the six shows that are nominated for the most Outstanding Comedy Series boast Jewish producers: “Big Band Theory” (Chuck Lorre), “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (Larry David), “Girls” (Lenna Dunham), and “Modern Family” (Steven Levitan), which once again racked up a ridiculous number of overall nominations.
In addition, half of the shows nominated for Outstanding Drama Series boast Jewish creators: “Game of Thrones” (David Benihoff and D.B. Weiss), “Mad Men” (Matthew Weiner) and”Homeland” ( Gideon “Giddy” Raff), which is based on the Israeli show “Hatufim” (abducted). “Homeland” is definitely the big new kid on the block, with four additional nominations, including for best actor (Damian Lewis) and actress (Claire Danes).
Jewish actors and actresses also made the cut, starting with Dunham and David, who also star in their respective shows. Max Greenfield, who plays Schmidty in “New Girl,” was nominated for best supporting actor, and Mayim Bialik is up for best actress in a comedy for her role in “The Big Bang Theory”
On the drama side, Julianna Margulies was the only Jewish nominee for best actress — thanks to her work on “The Good Wife.
And, of course, Jon Stewart and “The Daily Show” received a nomination for best variety show.
The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on September 23, and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
