(JTA) — Yale University named its provost, Peter Salovey, as the schoo’s new president.

The appointment of Salovey, a psychology scholar who is Jewish, was announced Thursday. Salovey has served as his alma mater’s provost for the past four years.

He succeeds Richard Levin, who will step down from a post he has held for 20 years at the end of the academic year.

Salovey was a professor and the dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the Ivy League school before becoming provost.

A search committee reviewed more than 150 candidates, according to The New York Times.
