It appears fashion designer John Galliano is out of the dog house.
The Anti-Defamation League released a statement over the weekend applauding Galliano’s career recovery, as he begins a new job fashion house Oscar de la Renta.
The ADL stated that they believe in a change of heart for Galliano, who was arrested in early 2011 while working at Dior for shouting anti-Semitic slurs at patrons in a Paris cafe, and was eventually ostracized from the fashion community.
“We believe that individuals can change their hearts and minds as long as they demonstrate true contrition,” the statement reads. “Mr. Galliano has worked arduously in changing his worldview and dedicated a significant amount of time to researching, reading, and learning about the evils of anti-Semitism and bigotry. Along his journey to recovery he met with us on numerous occasions. He has accepted full responsibility for his previous remarks and understands that hurtful comments have no place in our society. We wish him much success and look forward to working with him again in the near future as a spokesman against anti-Semitism, intolerance and bigotry.”
The ADL applauded the fashion house’s decision to hire Galliano, recognizing his “demonstrated efforts to
learn from his remarks about Jews, Hitler and the Holocaust.”
Galliano responded to the ADL, saying he “remains committed to making amends to those I have hurt.”
