WASHINGTON (JTA) — One suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing was killed in a shootout with police as authorities asked Bostonians to remain indoors while they pursued a second.
Authorities named the two suspects as brothers Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, who was on the loose, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in the shootout.
Reports said that the brothers were Chechens. An alleged accomplice reportedly is in custody.
"We’re asking people to shelter in place, in other words to stay indoors, with the doors locked," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in a news conference Friday. Patrick also asked Bostonians not to open doors except to police officers who identify themselves.
In the course of an extensive chase through Boston-area suburbs, a campus officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was killed and a transit policeman was wounded.
Bombs at the Boston Marathon’s finish line exploded Monday afternoon, killing three people and wounding dozens.
