(JTA) — Palestinians in Gaza fired two rockets into Israel, one of them landing in Ashkelon.

The rockets were not intercepted by Iron Dome system, the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson’s unit said in statement, and exploded in open areas on Thursday night. No one was hurt by the rockets, which triggered early warning sirens in the northern Negev.

One rocket landed in the southern city of Ashkelon and the other landed in the territory of the Eshkol Regional Council, bordering the Gaza Strip on the north and Egypt on the west.

In January, Palestinians in Gaza fired three times as many rockets at Israel as during an average month in 2013, according to Israel’s Shin Bet security service. These included 20 mortar and rocket attacks on Israel’s southern communities and another two attempted launches.

In addition, two improvised explosive devices were set off on the Gaza-Israel border.
