An Israeli commission of inquiry into last year’s Lebanon war stalled the publication of high-level testimony it gathered.
As part of an understanding with the High Court of Justice, the Winograd Committee was meant to have published by Pessah the censored testimony of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and former military chief Dan Halutz. But it did not, citing concerns that issuing incomplete accounts by war’s key decisionmakers could prejudice the Israeli public.
A left-wing lawmaker, Zehava Gal-On, protested against the Winograd Committee’s stalling, suggesting it favored government efforts to shore up Israeli morale which was hard-hit by the inconclusive 34-day war against Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.
