Gaza looks to Egypt for electricity

The Palestinian Authority plans to increase the amount of electricity that Egypt supplies to the Gaza Strip.

The P.A. Energy Authority announced Thursday it will be issuing tenders for Egyptian electricity firms interested in boosting supplies to Gaza, which currently gets most of its power from Israel.

Under the plan, Egypt would by 2010 provide Gazans with 150 megawatts of electricity – enough, in theory, to replace Israel’s input.

Since Hamas seized control of Gaza last year, and with cross-border rocket fire persisting, Israel has been reducing the amount of utilities it provides to the territory in hope of ultimately disengaging completely.
