Over 100 Christian clergymen from New York and adjacent cities who attended a matinee performance of the Passion Play at the Hippodrome, invited by Morris Gest to see whether the play is offensive and whether it varies from the New Testament narrative of the crucifixion, declined to make any comment on the controversial aspects of the presentation.

The clergymen were invited by the producer after the criticism it was subjected to in the addresses of Dr. Stephen S. Wise last Sunday and the Rev. John Haynes Holmes in the Community Church, who declared that the presentation was a perversion of the Bible story and offensive to Christians.
