A total of 16,829 Canadian Jews served in World War II, the Canadian Jewish Congress announced today.
Of these 703 are known to have been casualties. One hundred ninety Canadian Jews have been decorated for bravery and outstanding service by the Canadian, British, United States, French and Netherlands Governments, the Congress stated.
The Congress also announced that the bodies of Canadian Jewish airmen rest in Belgium, Holland, France, Malta, Libya, West Africa, and the Middle East as well as in a number of military cemeteries in Great Britain. The Star of David marks their graves.
