More than 18,000 members of the Knit Goods Union are awaiting the call for a general strike to paralyze the entire industry. The call is expected hourly.
Strike machinery is well geared, according to union officials, and ready to swing into motion. Meeting places for the strikers have been designated and circulars have been printed. Workers are demanding a ten to twenty per cent increase in wages, according to the classification of work, and a reduction in hours from thirty-seven and a half to thirty-five per week.
Union men held a mass demonstration in front of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, 66 Court street, yesterday in protest of that body’s alleged sponsoring of company unions. Leaflets warning workers to beware of “company unions” were distributed in mills and factories yesterday.
