A report on the activities of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) in this country between January 1 and March 31 showed Friday that 1,888 Jewish aliens arrived in this country during the three-month period. The report was issued by Isaac L. Asofsky, the general manager of the society.
Of the 1,888 arrivals, 1,166 were immigrants and 722 came on temporary visits or for business purposes. A considerable number of those classed as immigrants were direct from Germany or from nearby countries to which they had fled.
The report stated that 15,203 persons received information and advice from the society’s information bureau. This included the drawing up of affidavits on behalf of prospective immigrants. Requests to trace relatives in this country received from abroad, totaled 1,225, most of which were from Soviet Russia.
Jewish unemployed and homeless were provided with 93,636 meals and 11,370 nights of shelter.
