Twenty thousand persons went to the Polo Grounds Sunday for the vaudeville and field day of the amusement division of the $25,000,000 United Jewish Campaign. About $75,000 was raised for the fund.
Some of the Broadway choruses, including the “Kitty Kisses” company, the “Great Temptations” company, Earl Carroll’s “Vanities” and “The Vagabond King” company, performed.
Among the pugilistic and stage stars who appeared for the show were Al Jolson, Houdini, Eugene and Willie Howard, Phil McGraw, Andy Tucker, Paul Berlenbach, Ann Pennington, Harry Wills, the Marx Brothers, Tom Patricola, Buster West, Jack Redmond, Ace Hudkins and Harry Houdini.
Boxing bouts, which were part of the program, included one between Al Jolson and Benny Leonard, with Sophie Tucker and Louis Mann as referees.
Mayor James J. Walker was also present.
Three thousand orphans from the Widowed Mothers Fund Society, the Beth-El Sisterhood, the Hebrew Orphanage and similar institutions were present for the affair as guests of patrons, of whom Julius Tannen was chairman.
Joe Leblang, Chairman of the Theatrical Division of the United Jewish Campaign, in a short speech thanked all those who had contributed to making the day a success.
Associated with Mr. Leblang in the arrangements for the show were E. F. Albee, Ben Bernie, Leo Brecher, William A. Brady, Sidney S. Cohen, A. L. Erlanger, William Fox, Sam H. Harris, Harry Hershfield. Loney Haskell, Al Jolson, Carl Laemmle, Marcus Loew, William Morris, Charles O’Reilly, Marty Sampter, Lee Shubert, J. J. Shubert, Douglas N. Taussig, Jacob Wilk, A. H. Woods and Adolph Zukor.
The Shaare Shomayim Congregation synagogue, in Chicago, the new home of the First Roumanian congregation, at Douglas Boulevard and Millard Avenue, was dedicated with elaborate ceremonies. B. Itzkovitz, chairman of the dedication committee, made the address of welcome, followed by Rabbi Ephraim Epstein. Alderman Jacob M. Arvey, representing the mayor, and Leonard J. Grossman, who was principal speaker.
B. J. Braunstein, chairman of the building committee, and Mrs. Fanny A. Goldberg, president of the ladies auxiliary, also spoke.
William Blumenthal, superintendent of the Jewish Welfare Federation, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Executive Secretary of the Jewish Community Center, has resigned his posts in Omaha to accept the Directorship of the Cleveland Jewish Center. of which Dr. Solomon Goldman is rabbi. Mr. Blumenthal will begin his new duties on October first.
Previous to coming to Omaha Mr. Blumenthal was Executive Director of the Federation of Jewish Welfare Organizations of Los Angeles.
