There are now nearly 25,000 Jews serving in the various police formations in Palestine, it was disclosed today in Commons by Harold MacMillan, Under-Secretary for Colonies. Replying to a suggestion that thousands of Jews in the urban areas of Palestine be accepted in special police groups, MacMillan said that the difficulties in providing instructors and equipment make such a move impracticable at present.
War Minister Sir James Grigg, speaking in Commons yesterday, stated that the formation of the new Palestine regiment, which will contain Jewish and Arab battalions, is progressing and the new unit is being trained and equipped as fast as possible. The availability of equipment and operational needs must govern the securing of additional arms and other supplies, he said. Sir James added that he had no specific figures available on the number of recruits already enlisted in the new regiment.
