The memory of 67 Jews murdered in the 1929 Hebron massacre was commemorated yesterday in the old Jewish cemetery in Hebron. The ceremony was attended by 4000 people, among them Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren, and Ministers Yosef Burg and Zevulun Hammer. Goren called for the reconstruction of the Jewish cemetery in Hebron, “an eternal tombstone for Jewish right in Hebron,” he said. Following the ceremony, the participants toured the Jewish sites in this largest Arab city in Judaea.
Arab merchants declared a general strike in protest against the ceremony which coincided with the strike in Nablus protesting the value added tax. The strike took place despite a leaflet distributed by the neighboring Kiryat Arba residents calling for co-existence between the Arab and Jewish residents of Hebron.
