Shlomo Zalman Shragai, head of the Immigration Department of the Jewish Agency, told a press conference here today that 5, 000 Jews from the United States and Canada settled in Israel in 1963. He reported that with the industrialization of Israel there is a shortage of 40, 000 skilled workers who can come from the free lands.

While, until now, the emphasis has been on bringing Jews from lands of oppression, the Immigration Department will now concentrate on bringing Jews from the prosperous countries, he stated. Special arrangements are being made for their absorption. He called for an American “Peace Corps” of skilled workers and scientists to help the industrial development of Israel.
