What is believed here to be the beginning of a new purge in Nazi Germany is under way in Berlin, according to the latest reports reaching London.

Between 500 and 700 have been arrested in the latest Nazi roundup, according to reliable reports. While the new purge was said by prominent Nazi officials to be “a moral cleansing,” the fact that leading Nazis, many of whom held high government posts, were among those arrested, led to the belief here that the drive was moral incidentally only and that it was mainly political in nature. The camouflage was held essential in order to avoid memories of the June, 1930, purge, particularly in view of the nearness of the Saar plebiscite.
