More than $5,000,000 was raised here yesterday at a United Jewish Appeal conference of 300 leaders of Jewish communities in the Middle West at which the situation of the Jews in countries behind the Iron Curtain was analyzed by Max Lerner, noted author, who just returned from Europe, and Moses W. Beckelman, European director of the joint Distribution Committee.

The conference was also addressed by David Hacohen, member of the Israel Parliament. He branded the Soviet break in diplomatic relations with Israel a “carefully calculated move in a deliberate program of infamy against the Jewish people.” He added that “what we have been through in the early days has strengthened us. With your help we will continue to build and prepare ourselves to welcome any Jew who needs aid and sanctuary.”
