50th Anniversary of Sholem Aleichem’s Death Observed in Russia

The Soviet Embassy issued a report of the Novosti Press Agency today stating that extensive events are being held in Russia to memorialize the 50th anniversary of the death of the famous Yiddish writer, Sholem Aleichem.

The report said a mass anniversary meeting was held by the Soviet Writers’ Union in Moscow’s Central Writers’ Club on May 13, Prominent men of letters and public leaders participated. The report added that the anniversary was especially marked in Kiev, where Sholem Aleichem lived for many years. A meeting will be held May 19 in the Kiev Philharmonic Society Hall where, the report said, Sholem Aleichem’s works will be recited in the Yiddish language by Hya Khalif, and in Ukrainian by Anatoly Palamarenko. Other entertainers on the program will render Yiddish musical and dramatic selections.

The 50th anniversary of Sholem Aleichem’s death will also be observed in Moscow at the Chaikovsky Hall, in Kharkov, Riga, Vilne and other Soviet cities with a large Jewish population, where the works of the famous Jewish writer will be recited by Jewish actors, the report stated.
