Burt Cohen, of World Vision Enterprises, which has the international broadcast rights to the NBC “Holocaust” series, said today that the program has been purchased by Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Panama. Negotiations are being conducted with the national television networks of all Latin American countries, he said. But negotiations in Argentina are presently at a standstill.
Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum, director of the interreligious affairs department of the American Jewish Committee, who served as a consultant to NBC in the production of the Holocaust program, said that both the video cassettes and study guides prepared in connection with the program have been sent to Jewish leaders in Buenos Aires who are associated with the AJCommittee. These leaders are negotiating with officials of the National Television Network in Argentina, urging them to purchase the film. The talks have continued even though the Argentine government closed the AJCommittee office in Buenos Aires last year. Tanenbaum reported that the “Holocaust” script has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese and has been made available to every Jewish community in Latin America.
The AJCommittee is also involved in an ongoing effort to introduce the series in many Third World countries. Thailand, South Korea and Japan have expressed interest in the program to date.
