About 90 percent of the sequestration of foreign property in Egypt “hits Jewish families, ” The Economist reported today. Calling this fact “one of the most worrisome” aspects of the Nasser policy of “Socialism on the Nile,” The Economist declared: “An even more shameful hint of anti-Semitism is the tendency of some foreign Embassies in Cairo to fight rather harder for the rights of their non-Jewish, rather than their Jewish, citizens.”
Discussing the Egyptian economy in general, the weekly stressed that “Egypt has become heavily reliant on American aid,” declaring “if the Egyptian Army depends on Russian weapons, the Egyptian people at the moment depend no less urgently on American food.”
