Howard Shanker, a lawyer who is active in environmental and Native American issues, declared for the seat of Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.) in the center of the state. Shanker is one of several Democrats to declare their candidacy in the weeks now that Renzi, mired in scandal, has announced his decision not to run again. Renzi fended off a close challenge last year from another Jewish Democrat, Ellen Simon.
