A leading American Jewish group declared that the May 17 date set for Israel’s elections “seems sadly unresponsive to the needs of the moment.” The American Jewish Congress said in a statement that the five-month time frame for the campaign could bring the peace process to a halt and, therefore, harm Israel’s standing in world opinion.
