A mistrial was called in the case of a man who rampaged through the Seattle Jewish Federation.
Superior Court Judge Paris Kallas declared the mistrial on Wednesday, the eighth day of jury deliberations.
The jury wrestled with the issue of whether Naveed Haq, 32, was not guilty by reason of insanity.
Earlier in the deliberations, the jurors asked the judge in writing to clarify the legal definition of insanity. The judge said she could not give them any more help.
Haq, who has a history of mental problems, stormed the federation in July 2006 and shot six employees, killing one woman, saying he wanted to send a message about Israel and the Iraq war.
Prosecutors said Haq planned the shooting carefully and knew the difference between right and wrong when he executed the plan. They say they plan to retry the case this year.
