Jewish demonstrators last night interrupted a gala performance of the Soviet-state-run Bolshoi with demands that the Soviet Union grant Soviet Jewry freedom to emigrate. The demonstrators also distributed leaflets calling on the Soviet authorities to stop persecuting the Jews and grant them the rights guaranteed and provided for by the Soviet constitution.
However, contrary to what usually happens on such occasions in Western Europe, the audience sided with the demonstrators and hundreds of spectators joined in the pandemonium. Several of the demonstrators were briefly detained by police and the show continued.
